History Group Open Day

Beckingham cum Saundby History Group Open Day - 14th September 2013

The theme for the History Groupís Open Day this year was Rural Crafts and Hobbies. It was held in the Old Willow Works, Old Trent Road on Saturday 14th September, where visitors had the chance to walk through the Community Willow Garden, possibly the first time many from the parish had seen it. Outside the building people were greeted by a static display of a vintage tractor and plough equipment.

A Basket Making Course was taking place in which six people (pre booked and paid for) could take part learning how to make a basket. They were then able to take their works of art home.

Demonstrations included blacksmithing by Mr John Foster, wood turning by Mr John Taylor, cane weaving by Mr Brian Ingleton, plashing (hedge laying), and besom making along with rag rug making in which there was a chance to have a go.
Other crafts included were knitting, tatting, corn dollies and much more. There was a display of beautiful walking sticks locally made by Mr David Gent, who is also happens to be one of our local postmen.

A wonderful replica of a boat called Empire Meadow made by Mr Don Scott was on display, the original built by Watsonís shipyard. Beckingham Gardening Club had a stand with information on their activities.
The RSPB had a stand giving people the chance to find out about the work they do in the area, local birdlife and Beckingham Marshes.
There was the opportunity to explore the History Groupís village records in the research corner. Several stands were displaying various artefacts, photos and local information.
The admission was free with light refreshments available for a small charge.

Attendance for the day was good and the weather was kind. Sincere thanks go to all those who arranged, helped and supported this ever popular event.
