Group Regional Winners
This was the 10th year the Nationwide were presenting awards in respect of work done by individuals and groups for the community. This year included a separate section on Heritage awards which was to celebrate the Heritage Lottery Fund’s contribution as partners in the scheme. The awards were split into two categories, Community and Heritage and under each category separate awards for Young People, Groups and Individuals. For each category there would be 9 winners for each region (12 regions) and the winners were to be announced at an awards ceremony in July with 3 winners from each category and region going on to a National Final held in London in November.
E mails were sent out in early April to all those communities who had been successful in receiving a grant for community and heritage work asking them to nominate people and groups for the awards who they felt deserved recognition for their hard work and dedication on projects for the community. Since 2005 Beckingham had received various grants, one of which was from the Heritage Lottery Fund towards the History Group’s production of a book, calendar and a number of successful Open Days all in its work to support and follow the Old Willow Works Renovation project. Part of the funding included a portion to be used to create a website to cover the project which the Web Team had achieved and gone on to produce a comprehensive website covering all aspects of the Village. The nominations for awards that were submitted were as follows:-
  • Freda Proudley – individual Heritage Award for her work in organising and managing the History Group to achieve its goals.
  • The History Group – group Heritage Award for its work in recording the history of the village and the production of a book and calendar. Also for organising various Open Days in the Village and for incorporating work with the School.
  • Maxine Downes and Pat Suart of the Web Team – group Community Award for producing a website to follow the history and renovation work of the Old Willow Works

The closing date for nominations was 28th April and for all nominations a certificate was issued. In June Freda Proudley received a letter informing her she had been chosen as a Regional Winner for the East Midlands. Freda has worked hard to manage the History Group through its various projects and helped it achieve its goals and preserve the heritage of the village; not only the Willow Works but also the huge archive of material that Peter Mason had collected over several years. Included with the letter was an invitation to attend the prize giving ceremony at the ‘Merchants Adventurer’s Hall’ in York on 11th July.

The ceremony included all the East Midlands Regional winners and it was announced on the day those who had been successful in going through to the National Final on November 11th. There was a superb buffet lunch provided and photographs taken of each winner to be forwarded to the local press. It was a truly inspiring day to hear of all the schemes/projects that had been set up and the winners were truly deserving of their awards.
